Dear Home Office,
I was told by the UK Border Agency's helpline that it may be that once the biometrics are processed, the passport submitted with an EEA Family Member residence card application may be returned without imperiling the process. Can you confirm that this is true?

Dear FOI Requests,
As I've received the Certificate of Application, the Border Agency helpline tells me I can request my documents back without impinging on my residence card application status. I trust this is the answer to the question I raised here in my earlier message. Thank you.

Thank you for your email correspondence of 03 May. I am sorry for the
delay in replying to your email.
If a foreign national wishes to request documents back during the
application process, without withdrawing the application, this can be done
online.
Please find the links below for further information and form to make an
online request:
If the foreign national is a non EEA Family member who will be travelling
outside the United Kingdom, re-entry might not be as quick or
straightforward if he or she has no valid residence card or Biometric
Residence Permit. The Immigration Officer would need to be sure the
foreign national will still be entering as a family member and the
European National is still exercising treaty rights.
Border Force staff based at ports of entry decide whether to grant entry
to a person arriving into the United Kingdom through the immigration
control at the time of arrival on a case by case basis.
I hope this information is helpful.
